Introduction
Although widely published and read by itself, Bhagavad-gītā originally appears as an episode in the Mahābhārata, the epic Sanskrit history of the ancient world.
BG 1: Observing the Armies on the Battlefield of Kurukṣetra
Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: O Sañjaya, after my sons and the sons of Pāṇḍu assembled in the place of pilgrimage at Kurukṣetra, desiring to fight, what did they do?
BG 2: Contents of the Gītā Summarized
Sañjaya said: Seeing Arjuna full of compassion, his mind depressed, his eyes full of tears, Madhusūdana, Kṛṣṇa, spoke the following words.
BG 3: Karma-yoga
Arjuna said: O Janārdana, O Keśava, why do You want to engage me in this ghastly warfare, if You think that intelligence is better than fruitive work?
BG 4: Transcendental Knowledge
The Personality of Godhead, Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa, said: I instructed this imperishable science of yoga to the sun-god, Vivasvān, and Vivasvān instructed it to Manu, the father of mankind, and Manu in turn instructed it to Ikṣvāku.
BG 5: Karma-yoga — Action in Kṛṣṇa Consciousness
Arjuna said: O Kṛṣṇa, at the outset You asked me to renounce fruitive work, and again You advised me to work in devotional service. Now will You kindly tell me conclusively which of the two is more beneficial?
BG 6: Dhyāna-yoga
The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: One who is unattached to the fruits of his work and who works as he is obligated is in the renounced order of life, and he is the true mystic, not he who merely lights no fire and abstains from work.
BG 7: Knowledge of the Absolute
Arjuna said: O my Lord, O Supreme Person, I think Your form is eternal and full of bliss and knowledge. I have now understood the purpose of Your advent in this material world.
BG 8: Attaining the Supreme
Arjuna said: What is Brahman? What is the self? What are fruitive activities? What is this material manifestation? And what are the demigods? Please explain this to me.
BG 9: The Most Confidential Knowledge
The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: Because you are never envious of Me, O Arjuna, I shall impart to you this most secret knowledge, knowing which you will be relieved of the miseries of material existence.
BG 10: The Opulence of the Absolute
The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: Hear again, O mighty-armed Arjuna, My supreme word, which I desire to impart to you for your benefit because you are My dear friend.
BG 11: The Universal Form
Arjuna said: You have kindly explained to me the supreme mystery of the Personality of Godhead, and by Your words my illusion has been dispelled.
BG 12: Devotional Service
Arjuna said: Those devotees who are constantly engaged in Your devotional service are certainly the most elevated, but what of those who worship the impersonal Brahman?
BG 13: Nature, the Enjoyer, and Consciousness
Arjuna said: O my dear Lord, O Supreme Personality, I wish to understand the three modes of material nature and their influence on the living entity.
BG 14: The Three Modes of Material Nature
The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: Although I am the creator of this entire cosmic manifestation, I am nevertheless inactive and unaffected by the modes of material nature.
BG 15: The Yoga of the Supreme Person
The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: There is an eternal banyan tree that has its roots upward and its branches down. Its leaves are the Vedic hymns, and one who knows this tree is the knower of the Vedas.
BG 16: The Divine and Demoniac Natures
The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: Fearlessness, purification of one's existence, cultivation of spiritual knowledge, charity, self-control, performance of sacrifice, study of the Vedas, austerity and simplicity; nonviolence, truthfulness, freedom from anger, renunciation, tranquillity, aversion to faultfinding, compassion, freedom from covetousness, gentleness, modesty, steady determination; vigor, forgiveness, fortitude, cleanliness, freedom from envy and the passion for honor — these transcendental qualities, O son of Bharata, belong to godly men.
BG 17: The Divisions of Faith
Arjuna said: What is the situation of one who does not follow the principles of the scriptures but worships according to his own imagination? O Kṛṣṇa, is he in goodness, passion or ignorance?
BG 18: Conclusion — The Perfection of Renunciation
Sañjaya said: Thus I have heard the conversation of two great souls, Kṛṣṇa and Arjuna. And so transcendentally wonderful are these words that my hair is standing on end.
